In the lead up to Christmas, we visited one of our stockists, Two Byrds. Based in Ascot Vale Melbourne, owners Bree and Jan have been part of the ELK family for many years, stocking our collections over almost a decade.
The Mother and Daughter duo invited us into their festive store to share stories, local coffee spots and favourite ELK pieces.
How Did Two Byrds on Union begin?
I heard of a local boutique who was looking for someone and having grown up in the Ascot Vale area, I loved the heart and village feel of Union Road – it was so easy to make genuine connections with people. Six months down the track the business was up for sale, and I had that moment… could I actually do this? I didn’t finish school, had no business training but with the support of family and friends, we are soon to celebrate 7 years in business.
What is one word that describes Two Byrds?
Genuine.
What or who inspires you?
I am inspired by both the lovely people who walk through our doors every day and by the local, beautiful products that I have the pleasure of providing for my customers.
Where is your dream holiday destination?
I find it hard to go past local, as you can tell by the products in my store! Give me a cosy cabin somewhere tranquil near a good pub or restaurant and I’m happy.
Favourite spots to eat and drink in Ascot Vale?
We are incredibly spoilt for choice in Ascot Vale with so many fantastic cafés, bars and restaurants dotted along Union Road. Reverence Specialty Coffee and Tea, No.19 and Mister Nice Guy’s Bake Shop are all great for coffee and treats.
Most loved ELK piece this season?
Tough call. In apparel, I’d have to say the Cubo Skirt. I wore this gorgeous piece to a friend’s wedding in October and it felt amazing – it has pockets for all your wedding essentials.
My Mum, who is integral to the shop, loves the Eren Earrings – she wears them practically every day and gets stopped in the street with people complimenting them!
